Physical Therapy Services Provided by Coach Amy

Whether your goals are to function in daily life without pain or to achieve your athletic dreams, CoachAmyPT can help.

While Coach Amy specializes in treating runners and endurance athletes, she has patients participating in various sports, from Cross Fit to pickleball. And she treats the non-athletic population as well.

Coach Amy uses several methods to treat chronic and acute injuries from the neck down, including the jaw, shoulder, spine, hips, knees, ankles, and feet, including the big toe. Each treatment type helps to alleviate pain, restore function, prevent injury and enhance performance.

Coach Amy uses ART to help a patient she is treating for sciatica.

Active Release Technique (ART)

ART is a patented soft-tissue technique targeting the interface between structures, allowing them to move independently.

Coach Amy applies AFS to improve movement patterns in a patient with scoliosis.

Applied Functional Science (AFS)

AFS uses the principles of biomechanics to identify and treat the underlying cause of an injury.

Neurological Dry Needling (NDN)

NDN is a non-pharmacological, highly-effective treatment for musculoskeletal and neuromuscular conditions.

New: High Intensity Laser Therapy (HILT)

Photo coming soon. HILT is a non-invasive and painless treatment method. It stimulates cells, including pain receptors and the immune system, and can increase blood flow and decrease pain. It promotes the repair of damaged tissues of the musculoskeletal system and nerves, which can help with neurological regeneration.

Active Release Technique

Muscles, tendons, and nerves can get stuck or “hung up” on each other when scar tissue forms from repetitive activity, poor posture, activity, sport, or surgery. This causes dysfunction and can present as pain and decrease mobility and weakness.

This highly-effective and sought-after treatment has a success rate of up to 90% and is a preferred treatment by Ironman athletes and many professional sports teams, including our beloved KC Chiefs.

ART isn't just for professional athletes. It benefits anyone who participates in repetitive activity, including recreational athletes, weekend warriors, and non-athletes.

Coach Amy is certified in ART of upper and lower extremity, spine, long tract nerve, and level II ART of lower extremity.

ART is covered by insurance and can be incorporated into regular PT appointments.

Applied Functional Science

AFS uses the principles of biomechanics to identify and treat the underlying cause of an injury brought on by activities of everyday life and sport.

A thorough evaluation of movement includes assessing stability, mobility, and proprioception specific to each patient’s affected activities.

Faulty movement patterns are addressed with dynamic functional exercises. Both manual-assisted and independent-progressive methods are used.

Attention to the biomechanics of the musculoskeletal and neuromuscular system is key to pain-free function, prevention of injury and performance enhancement.

AFS is covered by insurance and is incorporated into regular PT visits.

Running-specific evaluations include assessment of run form for efficiency and injury prevention. These are not covered by insurance unless an injury is being treated.

Coach Amy is certified in AFS and has a Master of Science degree in Physical Therapy from the University of Kansas Medical Center.

Neurological Dry Needling

Needles are strategically placed in symptomatic points and neurological points in the body associated with those points. The needles create a micro lesion within the pathological tissue. This process disrupts the message between the nervous system and the tissue. This normalizes the inflammatory response and centrally mediates pain. This mechanical and neuromuscular effect enhances the body’s healing ability, ultimately reducing pain.

IDN can help prevent injury and enhance performance by normalizing chemicals around the muscles and improving nutrition in the nervous system. This leads to decreased soreness, improved strength, and superior muscle quality with prolonged and repetitive movements required with hobbies, sports, work, and daily life.

IDN is not covered by insurance but can be incorporated into a regular PT appointment at an additional cost.

JUST NEEDLING appointments are available for established patients. To schedule, email amy@coachamypt.com.

Coach Amy is certified in advanced IDN for Pain Management, Cervicogenic Migraines, and Sports Rehabilitation by the Integrative Dry Needling Institute.

High-Intensity Laser Therapy

HILT is safe if administered by a trained physical therapist. Coach Amy is trained and certified to use a safe and effective FDA-approved Therapeutic Class IV laser to stimulate cellular repair and decrease pain. A class IV laser is not an LED light therapy or cold laser. It is not low-power laser therapy (class IIIb). Discover the difference in Coach Amy’s blog post Introducing High-Intensity Laser Therapy at CoachAmyPT.

HILT emits powerful beams of multi-directional light energy to deep tissues. The laser is applied in long smooth strokes for several minutes to provide adequate dosage levels to structures below skin level, like muscles and nerves. Learn about the Science Behind High-Intensity Laser Therapy.

HILT is a treatment, not a cure; it is supplemental to other physical therapy methods such as manual treatment, dry needling, biomechanics, and functional exercises. It helps treat musculoskeletal conditions, including neuropathy, fascitis, tendonitis, arthritis, headaches, and joint pain.

HILT is not covered by insurance but can be incorporated into a regular PT appointment at an additional cost.
